On Monday, Patricia Villegas, the president of the teleSUR news multiplatform, participated in the inauguration of the 4th edition of the Patria International Colloquium in Havana, presenting the lecture “How to Establish a Counter-Hegemonic Agenda with Global Impact: The Case of teleSUR.”

“I am here on behalf of an extraordinary and wonderful group of people who have been working at teleSUR for 20 years in a Latin American and Caribbean communication effort,” she said.
“They have dedicated their lives and convictions to pushing this project forward. That is why it is not just me speaking, but all of us who make up teleSUR, as well as all of you who are part of this great communication endeavor,” Villegas emphasized.
She also reflected on the central role that television still plays in several Latin American regions despite the existence of social media and other information distribution channels.
Villegas recalled that teleSUR was founded in 2005 as a traditional television network under the leadership of commanders Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro, who sought to create a media outlet that would promote Latin American unity.
“teleSUR was born out of the need for a globally-reaching media outlet so that the world could see us from our own region,” she pointed out, stressing that teleSUR quickly became a platform for disseminating the realities of the peoples of the Global South.
In this regard, Villegas noted that teleSUR practically began by covering the events surrounding the coup d’etat against Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. Since then, teleSUR has covered many more stories that have shaped Latin American political events, such as the 2009 coup d’etat against Honduran President Manuel Zelaya.
“Over all these years, through the coverage of events like those, teleSUR has managed to establish itself as an international multiplatform that presents a counter-hegemonic communication experience,” Villegas highlighted.
From Monday to Wednesday, Havana will host the 4th edition of the International Colloquium Patria, which is being held in the context of Cuban Press Day. This event serves as a permanent tribute to the newspaper founded by Jose Marti in 1892 when the Cuban independence hero began spreading insurgent ideas against the Spanish empire.
